Black
music has been blessed with some of the most 'stunning'
& 'powerful' voices over the past 60 years,
voices that have set the standard to which we all aspire.
How
many of us have been inspired by the dynamic vocal performances
of the 'queen of soul' Aretha Franklin, or been almost
reduced to tears by the 'heart-wrenching' vocal renditions
of Luther Vandross, Whitney Houston, Anita
Baker, or Bebe & Cece?
This
ability to 'capture the essence' of a song is not just confined
to the 'oldskool', and the 'sangers' ethic has been
embraced by a whole new generation of singers led by the
likes of Lauryn Hill, Brian McKnight, Mary
'J' Blige, Rachelle Ferrell, India.Arie, Angie
Stone, Beyonce Knowles et al.

The
truth is there seems to be
an endless list of singers (past & present) who
have the 'skillz' to
'throw down' when its time to 'step up to the mic'.
So
what is it about a voice that leaves the listener in awe,
and can that even be
defined? Probably not, but one thing is for certain, each
vocalist named here has developed a bunch of 'USP's'
that have helped set them apart. It's in the tonal character,
the style of phrasing, the vocal dynamics, the emotional
interpretation, the style of add-lib, the individual vibe
and so much more! Above all it's in the 'ability &
desire' to 'combine & understand' the intricate
elements of the voice that enable them to use their fine
tuned instruments like 'true' musicians producing
"voices that touch souls".
